Tich Maredza Band
at the NOW Lounge June 1, 2012
you can catch them June 7 at the Afrofest Launch Party
June 7, 2012 - 6 to 11pm
the Gladstone Hotel, Toronto
TORONTO - I've been a fan of Tich Maredza and his talented band since I discovered them a couple of years ago.
He opened the set with a few solo numbers in tribute to a cousin and close friend who'd recently passed away. Those songs were meditative rather than melancholy and still characterized by his complex melodic patterns.
When the band came on the tempo and mood turned definitely upbeat. Their style is multi-layered. It's melodic and has a tropical flavour with whiffs of the blues and pop song structures, and a tight rhythm section of bass, drumkit and congas that underpins the two guitars. As he says, "We add a little bit of this and that to it - but still retain our African roots."
You can check them out - and be the first to catch this year's Afrofest line-up - at the Afrofest launch party on June 7, where they'll play along with Njacko Backo (Cameroon) and Jabulani (South Africa).
AFROFEST 2012 will take place at Woodbine Park on July 7th - 8th.
Afrofest, a free celebration of the richness and diversity of African culture, is set for Woodbine Park in Toronto on Saturday July 7th and Sunday July 8th. Featuring world-renowned African musicians and top African groups based in Canada, an African marketplace, food and craft vendors, artistic displays, music workshops, and organized activities for youth and children. Afrofest is THE cultural event of the summer.
