From a media release:
The PB and J Sketchprov Show: FIRST OF 2011
Bread & Circus Theatre
299 Augusta Avenue, Toronto
Thursday Jan 20th at 9:30pm.
PB and J is a trio of some of the hottest and established performers in the Canadian Comedy Scene, such as Pat Thornton (creator/star/head writer of the Comedy Network series Hotbox and founding member/former head writer of the Sketchersons’ Sunday Night Live), Bob Banks (from the improv juggernauts Big In Japan and Mantown!) and 2nd City's Jason DeRosse.
As well, for this show the guest comedy troupe is Fratwurst (2010 Sketchfest), the guest musical band is The Does, and as always our host is Batman.
P - pat thornton
Besides being an adorable improviser, Pat is also an established stand-up and sketch performer. He’s the creator/star/head writer of the Comedy Network series Hotbox, a founding member/former head writer of the Sketchersons’ Sunday Night Live, and recently wrote for CBC’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes. As an actor he has sizeable role in the anticipated movie Rollertown, was a regular on the series Punched Up and appeared on Howie Do It, The Jon Dore Television Show, Monster Warriors and Testees. As a stand-up he appeared on the Cream of Comedy Special, LOL for Muchmusic, Just For Laughs and South By Southwest. He’s also a surprisingly good dancer so long as there’s no choreography involved.
B - bob banks
Since 2005, Bob has been in T.O. performing in all sorts of comedy. A semi-finalist in the 2007 Yuk-Yuks Great Canadian Laugh-Off and the only adopted member of the award-winning sketch troupe The Polecats, he has mostly dedicated himself to his original passion of improv as part of such troupes as Big In Japan and Mantown! A founding member of the improv collective PROJECTproject, Bob also co-produced the first two Combustion festivals and has been an invited guest to every major Canadian improv festival. Bob is a three-time Toronto Improv-Comedy Cagematch champion. He has developed an improv workshop called "Releasing your inner Kanye" and has taught it around North America.
J - jason derosse
A two-time Canadian Comedy Award (CCA) Winner, Jason has almost a solid decade of stage and television comedy under his belt. Currently you can find him on stage with The Second City Touring Company, The Sketchersons’ Sunday Night Live (CCA Winning Best Sketch Troupe), improv juggernaut Mantown!, and Maybe (which the Toronto Star called “the next generation of great Canadian sketch comedy”). On television Jason can be found as a core member of The Comedy Network’s Hotbox and as a member of the upcoming season of Scare Tactics with Tracey Morgan, but you may know him best from his many commercial appearances.
Fratwurst combines the mentality of a college kegger with the eloquent ramblings of a drunken Mark Twain. We're like four uncles, your mother would trust us, but we'll still ask you to pull our fingers at Christmas dinner.
Stage Manager: Mark Andrada
Musical Director: Chris New
Produced by Stephen Kew and Richard Young
what’s the pb and j sketchprov show?
It’s the monthly show from the awesomely adorable comedy troupe PB and J, going up the third Thursday of every month at the Bread & Circus Theatre in Toronto, ON. Each night PB and J perform their almost-patented form of comedic improv called “sketchprov”, which has garnered great reviews and media buzz (NOW Magazine, EYE Weekly, blogTO, Panic Manual). This month’s show also features guest comedy troupe Fratwurst (2010 SketchFest), musical guest band The Does and special host Batman (The Dark Knight, DC’s Final Crisis, DC’s Justice League).
what the heck is “sketchprov”?
“Improv”, where scenes are made up on the spot, can take many different forms. In “Sketchprov”, after getting their scene titles from the audience, PB and J focus their improv into the structure of “Sketches”. In other words, their improvised scenes tell a story and have a high joke ratio. So no time to rest between laughs, put up by a bunch of experts in improv and sketch-comedy!
