This sounds like a really great opportunity to get hands on theatre experience for ages 14 - 18 this summer.

“SHOUT OUT” TO YOUTH – BUILD A PLAY AT FACTORY
Toronto, ON – Wednesday, June 30, 2010… Sara Meurling, Managing Director at Factory Theatre, home of the Canadian playwright, is proud to announce the theatre company’s first Youth Ensemble
Playbuilding Workshop for youth aged 14 - 18, Monday – Friday, August 16 – 27, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Meurling says, “Our focus is on the entire process of creating a play from preproduction to tech to performance, and is part of a larger community activation program to open the doors of the Factory Theatre to youth.” Over the years, Factory’s youth engagement process has included student matinees, workshops with teachers, and Factory First Acts, in which Founder and Artistic Director Ken Gass worked with high school playwrights; Gass has also worked with youth performers in the original redevelopment of George F. Walker’s Tough! (LuminaTO 2007).
The two-week Youth Ensemble Playbuilding Workshop is led by Adam Paolozza (TheatreRUN, Theatre Smith-Gilmour) with professional theatre workers and featured guest artists working out of the historic Factory Theatre building at Bathurst and Adelaide. Members of the ensemble will learn and develop a range of theatrical skills including technical theatre and production, while exploring the central theme of loyalty through physical performance, music, and playwriting. Meurling says, “Working in an ensemble to create and present a new work will help cultivate skills in leadership, conflict resolution, empowerment and community building. No experience is necessary and all skill levels are encouraged!” The workshop will culminate with an original performance in the Studio Theatre for a live audience of family, friends, supporters, and invited guests.
Supported in part through the Province of Ontario Ministry of Culture, Cultural Strategic Infrastructure Fund, the Youth Ensemble Playbuilding Workshop fee is $300 per person, with subsidies available. The fee includes transportation (two TTC tokens per day per student, as required) and lunches.
Limited spaces are available; contact Summer Project Coordinator Franny McCabe-Bennett at Factory Theatre for more information (email franny@factorytheatre.ca or call (416) 504 - 4473 ext 229). Visit the Youth Ensemble Playbuilding Workshop Facebook page here.
